Experiments

Ellen invented a fun game which I really enjoy.

You see, unlike Americans who are generally raised to walk around smiling in public like they love everyone, Spaniard do not waste energy on strangers.

So when we are on the bus, or on the street, sometimes we'll smile at Spaniards and give a little affirming nod. Sometimes they become noticeably uncomfortable, but sometimes, like today, they smile back. Sometimes they are a little startled and quickly look away. Sometimes they just stare back stone-faced.

I know it sounds stupid, but it's actually quite diverting.

I also like it when I go into stores to order something, the employee hears my accent, knows where I'm from immediately, and wants to practice their English.

I love how uncomfortable it makes them! It's like "Oh no! You are proving that you are a real person and not just a stereotype!" I also like it when they smile back though. I can't believe I just siesta-d for a whole hour.

I totally did that in Russia too! Except after a while I got really tired of them practing the only English they knew. (hello) And then they'd ask for our autographs, weird.
I like your haircut.

I love your comment about the Spaniards wanting to speak to you in English! How funny. I'll try to start smiling at the British boys for you. Perhaps then I will not come back a total disappointment to all my friends and family for not meeting English men.

Do they do it in a Wisconsin accent? That'd be practically hilarious.

In Wisconsin sometimes I play this game where you wave to random people you see on the street from your car and see if they wave back. Usually they slowly wave back with this confused look on their face as if they are trying to figure out who you are. It is quite amusing.
